From Designer Central to POWER’BY UPS, Without Stopping Operations

3DEXPERIENCE upgraded from 2017x to 2021x, then CATIA V5 data migrated from Designer Central to POWER’BY (UPS), with SmarTeam data migrated on demand.

The challenge and what we did

The challenge

  • Upgrading from 3DEXPERIENCE 2017x to 2021x raised compatibility and integration problems, particularly with CATIA V5 running through Designer Central.
  • CATIA V5 data had to move from Designer Central into the new 2021x environment integrated with POWER’BY UPS.
  • SmarTeam data had to be migrated on demand between different business units and customers.
  • A root assembly was found to contain numerous revisions of a single reference, and all revisions coming out of Designer Central shared identical file names — which UPS could not accommodate in one CATIA session, producing assembly opening errors.
  • Attribute mapping and data inconsistencies in Designer Central compounded the integration work.

What we did

  • Phase 1 — executed the upgrade to 3DEXPERIENCE 2021x in three days, using ANT scripts configured and tested in advance, resolving the compatibility issues and keeping CATIA V5 integration working through Designer Central in the new environment.
  • Phase 2 — migrated CATIA V5 data from Designer Central to 3DEXPERIENCE 2021x using POWER’BY UPS and SteepGraph’s Data Migration Framework.
  • Built customised data mapping and transformation to migrate SmarTeam data into 2021x using UPS technology.
  • Corrected assembly references manually across all 25 assemblies so they reflected the latest revisions.
  • Modified the loading code so the latest structure loaded consistently despite the duplicate file names coming out of Designer Central.
  • Trained users on the new data model.

What we found

The migration was not one move but two, and they could not be done at once. The platform had to come up from 2017x to 2021x first, and only then could CATIA V5 data be taken out of Designer Central and into POWER’BY UPS. Two findings changed the shape of the work. A root assembly turned out to hold numerous revisions of the same reference. And every revision coming out of Designer Central carried an identical file name — which UPS cannot accommodate, because it will not hold multiple CAD items with the same file name in a single CATIA session, and the assemblies simply failed to open.

What we built

Phase one delivered the upgrade to 2021x in three days, using ANT scripts configured and tested in advance, with CATIA V5 integration still running through Designer Central. Phase two moved the CATIA V5 data across to POWER’BY UPS. SmarTeam data was handled separately, with customised mapping and transformation so it could be migrated on demand between business units and customers rather than all at once. The duplicate file names were resolved in code, so the latest structure loaded consistently, and the 25 affected assemblies had their references corrected by hand to point at the current revisions.

“SteepGraph provided their ETL tool to migrate from 3DEXPERIENCE 2017x to 21X. and from Smarteam to 3DEXPERIENCE. In about 10 months, we could change the methodology to work on the platform, migrate all the data, and test everything. And we didn’t stop operation.”
