The challenge and what we did
The challenge
- The customer had started on 2013x and been upgraded to 2017x, so the platform carried the history of two version transitions.
- Extensive customisation, implemented to meet specific requirements, introduced complexity into the upgrade.
- Complex data volume.
- Moving to 2021x required a degree of de-customisation, adding a further layer of complexity to the upgrade path.
What we did
- Delivered a streamlined upgrade through a carefully designed run book, completing the entire upgrade in three days.
- Used precisely configured and thoroughly tested ANT scripts to keep the upgrade smooth and error-free.
- Migrated the customer from a traditional on-premises setup to an Azure private cloud environment at the same time.
What we found
This platform had been through two upgrades already — 2013x to 2017x, and now 2017x to 2021x — and each had left something behind. The extensive customisation built to meet specific requirements was the main complication, because 2021x required a degree of de-customisation before it would take. Combined with a complex data volume, that made the upgrade path longer than a version number suggests.
What we built
The approach was to make the upgrade a rehearsed procedure rather than a live exercise. A carefully designed run book set out the sequence, and precisely configured, thoroughly tested ANT scripts executed it — which is what allowed the entire upgrade to complete in three days. The move to cloud happened at the same time rather than afterwards: the customer was migrated from a traditional on-premises setup to an Azure private cloud environment in the same programme, with CAD and EPL management, engineering BOM, change management, line effectivity, manufacturing BOM in DELMIA and the SAP integration all carried across.
